Preserving a Community Tradition with the SBA 504 Program

When Kelly Larson decided to purchase Fortino’s General Store in Grand Haven, she knew it was an opportunity to preserve a local institution and continue a long-standing tradition. With support from Great Lakes Commercial Finance (GLCF) and the SBA 504 loan program, she was able to make the purchase with a low-down payment and secure long-term fixed interest rates. The 504 loan program also allowed her to finance building renovations and improvements, making the investment manageable while protecting her cash flow.

“The SBA 504 program not only allowed me to preserve a beloved local institution but also positioned me to build upon its history for future generations,” said Kelly Larson, Owner of Fortino’s.

Kelly’s Path to Ownership

Kelly’s connection to the candy and ice cream business began at 15, when she worked at Temptations. Four years later, her parents purchased the store, and Kelly continued to work there through college and beyond. She later purchased another ice cream shop and, in 1999, merged it with a seasonal candy store to create Sweet Temptations.

In 2014, after years of successfully running Sweet Temptations, Kelly saw the opportunity to purchase Fortino’s, a Grand Haven staple. With the SBA 504 program, GLCF provided financing that made the purchase possible while offering benefits such as long-term fixed rates, lower down payment requirements, and the ability to finance building improvements and equipment purchases.

Community and Business Impact

Under Kelly’s ownership, Fortino’s continues to thrive as a local gathering place. The business has created jobs, and Kelly and her family are deeply committed to giving back. They volunteer their time, support local events, and host an annual fundraiser for area schools, which has contributed over $100,000 to date.

The business also focuses on investing in employees. Kelly fosters a culture of respect, learning, and growth, helping her team reach their full potential both professionally and personally.

Overcoming Challenges, Investing for the Future

Running a business comes with challenges. After purchasing Fortino’s, Kelly managed major building renovations and repairs, including updating electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. She also converted upstairs apartments into short-term rental units, creating new revenue streams while managing cash flow effectively.

Thanks to the SBA 504 program, Kelly could invest confidently in Fortino’s without overextending her resources. The program’s structure gave her the flexibility to maintain her business operations while making necessary improvements and expansions.

The Legacy Continues

With the support of GLCF and the SBA 504 loan program, Kelly Larson has preserved Fortino’s and strengthened its place in the West Michigan community. Her passion for food, dedication to employees, and commitment to the community ensure that Fortino’s will continue to be a local favorite for generations to come.
