Their Story
Being a state surrounded by the Great Lakes leads to significant shoreline erosion across Michigan. The damage from Lake Michigan has impacted homes and limited access to the beaches. Lisa Spaugh, owner of EZ Beach Steps, saw an opportunity when she struggled to maintain secure beach access as her wooden steps kept getting swept away. With constantly changing water levels and shifting dunes, Spaugh knew she couldn’t wait for the erosion to stop—this is when the idea for EZ Beach Steps bloomed.

EZ Beach Steps sells adjustable, aluminum beach steps designed to adapt to the ever-changing Lake Michigan waters. Spaugh created the designs and worked with her late father to finalize them, together building the first set of steps. Once installed, demand for their products quickly grew.

The Vision
Partnering with local businesses to foster economic growth and create jobs in the community is something Spaugh greatly values. EZ Beach Steps is committed to delivering quality products and ensuring that partner installers provide the same level of quality and service.

“As a woman-owned business, I work to support other women, empowering them to realize their own visions. I [also] have a veteran managing the shop, assembly, and deliveries…” Spaugh explained. Her commitment extends beyond the products and services EZ Beach Steps offers—she aims to positively impact her community and the people within it. Quality, community, and growth are the core values guiding her business.

The Journey
Starting your own business can be scary, but for Lisa Spaugh, the support of the West Michigan community made all the difference. She received positive feedback from her customers and formed relationships with reliable partners. Before long, her loyal customers began spreading the word about EZ Beach Steps, and her business began to thrive. “It’s a very connected community—if someone can’t help you, they know someone who can and are happy to connect the dots,” said Spaugh.

In the early days, Spaugh faced challenges as a woman in manufacturing and often felt overlooked by some suppliers. But this didn’t discourage her; she sought out supportive suppliers and quickly grew her business. Now, EZ Beach Steps allows the community to access the beach again without worrying about their investment in steps being washed away. The company has also contributed to the growth of small businesses they partner with, boosting revenue and employment. They have expanded their network of installer partners and added employees dedicated to sales and installation.

GLCF and the SBA 504 Loan Program
Our team of experts is always ready to guide entrepreneurs step-by-step through the SBA 504 Loan Program. At first glance, the process may seem daunting and time-consuming, but with GLCF’s expertise, it becomes manageable and stress-free. “I’m not sure I could have done it alone; I might have just given up on the loan without their support,” said Spaugh. New small business owners face many challenges, and balancing these with everyday life can be overwhelming.

Without the SBA 504 Loan, Spaugh wouldn’t have been able to purchase the building where EZ Beach Steps products are manufactured, and the customer experience could have suffered. GLCF is grateful that its partnership with Spaugh’s business allowed her vision to not only come to fruition but also to thrive.

Projects like these reflect GLCF’s mission: supporting communities by fostering the growth and success of entrepreneurs and their small businesses.
